Course Details 

Beginning Arabic I & II 

The Beginning Arabic classes are divided into two levels. Level I  is for the student with no prior exposure to Arabic. 70 percent of the class will focus on MSA and 30 percent will focus on ECA with the goal of each complementing and confirming knowledge and use of the other. Instruction will be in English with increased use of Arabic as the course progresses. Level II is similar, but is designed for students who already know the Arabic alphabet, and have completed at least one semester of prior study. 

Modern Standard Arabic 

The MSA component will focus on all four uses of Arabic (Listening Comprehension, Speaking, Reading, Writing) from the beginning. The student will be exposed to listening comprehension and reading exercises and will be expected to share in Conversation and Presentation exercises and submit written samples of their work. (Total 112 hours)

Egyptian Colloquial Arabic

The ECA component will focus on listening comprehension and speaking skills. Understanding the grammar and usage of ECA with a strong emphasis on conversational proficiency via in-class conversation and out-of-class interaction with Egyptians -structured and unstructured. (48 hours)

Intermediate Arabic

This class is designed for the student who has basic exposure to Arabic in an academic setting (typically 2 semesters or more). The student should be able to use basic grammatical and lexical structures in Arabic. Instruction will be in Arabic.

Modern Standard Arabic 

The MSA component will focus on all four uses of Arabic (Listening Comprehension, Speaking, Reading, Writing). The purpose is to expand the students vocabulary to cover a broad range of topics and to help the student comprehend and use more complex grammatical and lexical structures. Beside use of the text, students will be exposed to authentic written and verbal pieces. An oral presentation on some aspect of Arab culture or personal interest at the end of the term will required as well. (96 hours)

Egyptian Colloquial Arabic

The ECA component will focus on listening comprehension and speaking skills. Emphasis will be placed on mastery of verb tense and construction of complex sentences. Students will be exposed to a number of realistic conversational opportunities and will be required to make an oral presentation at the end of the term. (64 hours)

Intermediate - Advanced Arabic

Intermediate-Advanced Arabic is for students with at least 4 semesters of prior experience in Arabic. Instruction will be in Arabic alone, and a firm knowledge of basic grammatical structures is expected. 

Modern Standard Arabic

The MSA component will enhance all four uses of Arabic (Listening Comprehension, Speaking, Reading, Writing) utilizing the textbook in addition to supplementary authentic texts from various media sources. Students will be expected to use their skills to complete a small academic paper with an accompanying presentation. 

Egyptian Colloquial Arabic

The ECA component will be adapted to the skill level and needs of the students involved. An oral presentation will be expected at the end of the semester.
